Semaglutide is prescription medication used to treat type 2 diabetes in adults. It belongs to the class of drugs called GLP-1 receptor agonists and works by increasing insulin production and reducing glucose production by the liver. It is administered by injection and helps lower blood sugar levels, improve glycemic control, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in people with type 2 diabetes. It is important to note that Semaglutide should be used as part of a comprehensive treatment plan that includes diet, exercise, and other diabetes medications as prescribed by a healthcare professional.

Injections are administered weekly & given subcutaneously, targeting areas such as the abdomen, inner thighs, or upper arm.

The ideal candidate should have a BMI above 30 and be in overall stable health. It’s essential, however, to consult with a healthcare clinician to determine individual suitability and ensure there are no underlying health concerns that might contraindicate its use.

It’s important that you consider whether or not this type of a weight loss injection is right for you. Here are a few things to keep in mind when it comes to what is offered:

  • Enhanced Weight Loss: Weight loss injections can provide an additional tool to support weight loss efforts. These medications are specifically designed to target appetite regulation, metabolism, and fat storage, which can help individuals achieve greater weight loss compared to lifestyle modifications alone.

  • Appetite Control: Weight loss injections can help regulate appetite and reduce food cravings. They work by targeting hormonal pathways involved in hunger and satiety, helping individuals feel fuller and more satisfied with smaller portions of food.

  • Increased Compliance: Injectables offer a convenient and structured approach to weight loss. Depending on the specific medication, injections may be administered weekly, monthly, or at other intervals. This scheduled dosing can help improve treatment compliance and adherence to the weight loss plan.

  • Potential Health Benefits: Weight loss injections can provide additional health benefits beyond just weight reduction. They may help improve metabolic parameters such as blood glucose levels, blood pressure, and cholesterol profiles. These improvements can have positive effects on overall health.

Like any medication, Semaglutide  or GLP-1 therapy may cause side effects. The following are potential side effects associated with these weight loss injections based on available clinical trial data:

  • Gastrointestinal Effects: The most commonly reported side effects are gastrointestinal in nature. These may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and decreased appetite. These symptoms are usually mild to moderate in severity and tend to improve over time as the patient’s body gets used to the medication and they learn the routine of the new reduced fat and caloric intake.

  • Hypoglycemia: Semaglutide, like other glucose-lowering medications, can cause low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia). The risk of hypoglycemia may be increased when either is used in combination with certain other anti-diabetic medications, such as insulin or Sulfonylureas.

  • Injection Site Reactions: Some individuals may experience injection site reactions, such as pain, redness, or itching at the injection site. These reactions are generally mild and temporary.

Please let the nurse know if you have any of these side effects.

Although anyone who has been diagnosed as obese can receive a typical Semaglutide dose, regardless of age, ethnicity, or BMI, ideal candidates are overweight adults with a body mass index of 30 or higher and have tried to lose weight through diet and exercise but have been unsuccessful or those with a BMI of 27  or higher suffering from any of the following diseases:

  • Type 2 Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Gastroesophageal reflux
  • Osteoarthritis

Most patients can safely use Semaglutide when monitored by a qualified physician. However, if you have been diagnosed with any of the following conditions, there may be an increased risk of complications, and our we may suggest a safer avenue for weight loss:

  • Thyroid cancer
  • Thyroid tumors
  • Uncontrolled diabetes
  • Pancreatitis

Please Note: Semaglutide therapy should not be used in patients with a history of multiple endocrine neoplasia, medullary thyroid cancer, family history of medullary thyroid cancer, insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetes utilizing sulfonylureas or patients with history of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia).

If you have any of the above, you will not be eligible to start GLP-1 therapy and should not register for our program.
